Metanome sequencing services selected by DNA Genotek to validate innovative microbiome collection kit

Improved sample collection delivers higher quality data

metanomeMetanome, Inc., an industry leader in comprehensive metagenomic services and data analysis, has provided 16S Gene Sequencing Services, including library preparation, sequencing and bioinformatics, to DNA Genotek for the validation of its OMNIgene®•GUT collection kit.  This innovative all-in-one system is designed to easily collect high quality microbial DNA for gut microbiome profiling.  The kit ensures that the sample is stabilized and liquefied immediately upon collection and maintains an accurate and reliable profile for days at room temperature, eliminating the inconveniences and expense associated with cold-chain shipping requirements. In addition, the liquid sample is ideal for standardizing lab protocols and increasing processing efficiency.

Dr. Joseph Petrosino, Founder and Chief Science Officer of Metanome, Director of the Alkek Center for Metagenomics and Microbiome Research at Baylor College of Medicine, and Associate Professor of Virology and Microbiology at Baylor, said “We know from our experience with the Human Microbiome Project and numerous other studies that the quality of metagenomic data can be significantly impacted by how the primary sample is collected and stored. The OMNIgene•GUT collection kit helps to standardize this critical step and ensure that the microbiota profiles generated accurately represent the in vivo state. We recommend the use of this kit for those working with primary stool samples.”

Petrosino will present technical data on ‘Scaling Metagenomics for Population Studies’ at the upcoming Human Genomics Organization meeting in Kuala Lumpur, March 14 to 17.

“Microbiome researchers and clinicians will benefit from this proven approach for collecting and stabilizing the highest quality samples, which makes significant discoveries more achievable,” Petrosino said. “The combined offering of enhanced sample collection, full service metagenomics, expert guidance and advanced, curated databases is key to driving new discoveries.”
