Oragene as a solution for international DNA sample collection

Posted by Nicholas Ramdass on Tue, Oct 22, 2013 @ 09:10 AM

The author of this article, Nicholas Ramdass, is a Sales Manager at DNA Genotek Inc.

Oragene is truly a DNA collection device that has a global impact. Currently, Oragene is used for the non-invasive self-collection of DNA from saliva in more than one hundred countries and on six continents. As a salesperson at DNA Genotek, I have the privilege of working with some of the world’s leading researchers who are studying every aspect of genetics from mental illness to cancer, and from chronic health issues to the very rarest of diseases. My favorite part of my job has always been helping researchers find solutions for projects with complex collection logistics, especially those that transcend international boundaries.

DNA Genotek’s Top 10 List for 2012

Posted by Ian Curry on Tue, Jan 08, 2013 @ 10:01 AM

Each year I look forward to the task of reflecting on the year gone by and coming up with a top 10 list that represents highlights of the year for DNA Genotek, our customers and the health community. It was 2009 when I sat down to write the first version of this list and each year, it is one of our most popular blog articles. It is often difficult to choose the items that make this list – mostly because there are so many exciting developments to talk about. The items that made the list this year are some of the most interesting I’ve written about as I believe many of them will change the way we look at genomics in the future. I won’t be surprised if some of them also appear on top 10 lists in the coming years as several of them have some serious staying power. I hope you enjoy DNA Genotek’s top 10 list for 2012.

Solving genetic mysteries with DNA from saliva

Posted by Shauna White on Thu, May 31, 2012 @ 10:05 AM

Dr. Hugh Rienhoff is well known as a technology visionary, entrepreneur, and venture investor in life sciences. In addition to his current role as CEO of FerroKin BioSciences, and his appointment as a Visiting Scientist at the Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute, he has also founded the nonprofit organization MyDaughtersDNA.org, a community focused on aiding those with diagnostically challenging genetic conditions. It was not simply that he was a trained clinical geneticist and had the background and resources to spur this effort. The motivation was simple: Dr. Rienhoff ‘s daughter was born with an unknown genetic disorder. She exhibited a puzzling array of symptoms including small muscles -- no one is sure what might lie in her future because no one is sure what is wrong with her.

Collaboration, collective action and DNA from saliva help end disease

Posted by Shauna White on Thu, Jul 22, 2010 @ 10:07 AM

We were recently introduced to an organization at the heart of a movement focused on the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. It’s a movement that is designed to end these diseases faster. The organization is called the Global Business Coalition (GBC) on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria and DNA Genotek has joined the GBC in its fight to end these diseases. DNA Genotek chose to join the GBC because there is a natural fit between their mandate and our technologies. GBC brings together businesses across various sectors to help fight global epidemics. Our products, designed to enable safe, easy and reliable collection of DNA and RNA samples, are the building blocks to genetic research and analysis of these diseases. The Oragene family of products is unique in that they facilitate research in low-resource settings where these diseases are most prevalent.

DNA from Saliva.... The Newest Tool in Cancer Research?

Posted by Shauna White on Tue, Mar 09, 2010 @ 11:03 AM

Recent statistics suggest cancer mortality rates are declining due to better prevention, early detection methods and improved treatments, yet so much remains to be done. With cutting-edge research continually pushing the boundaries of science and discovery, it is not surprising that an increasing number of cancer researchers are turning to the newest tool in the DNA collection toolbox - DNA from saliva.

Hunting for Cancer Genes with DNA from Saliva

Posted by Shauna White on Tue, Feb 09, 2010 @ 12:02 PM

Every day, it seems, scientists learn something new about how our genes work. One fascinating area of research involves understanding the role of our genes in the initiation, progression and treatment of diseases; such as cancer. Understanding cancer on a molecular and genetic level makes for good science and good medicine. We understand that all cancers are not created equally. From the moment you are conceived, your genes may increase your susceptibility to developing certain cancers or, later on, your environmental exposures or other factors may cause changes in your genes that cause cancer to develop. Cancer is not one disease, but many, adding to the complexity and breadth of studies.

DNA Genotek's Top 10 List for 2009

Posted by Ian Curry on Mon, Jan 04, 2010 @ 14:01 PM

I have to admit, coming up with DNA Genotek's "Top 10 list for 2009" was more difficult than I imagined it would be. There are so many great things that happened in the past year - in our company, with our customers, and in the field of genetics - but I think I've narrowed it down to those that are most significant.
