I’m sure you are familiar with the expression “Garbage in, Garbage out”. Popular in the field of computer science, it implies that incorrect or low quality input will result in correspondingly poor output. The mere existence of a result is no guarantee of its quality or accuracy, as surely as cooking with the wrong ingredients will not produce your desired dish.

A fascinating area of research that has been gaining a lot of momentum concerns the influence of our microbiome with overall health and disease. The human microbiome encompasses the totality of microbes, their genetic elements and their environment. Studies have shown an association between the human oral microbiota and risk of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and certain cancers. There are many factors that influence microbial populations, such as dietary factors, exposure to pathogenic organisms and overall health status. The relationship between the host and its resident commensal and pathogenic organisms is complex and dynamic; and an exciting area of science with so much yet to be discovered.
It has been just over a month since we received all the applications for the DNA Genotek Grant Program. We were thrilled with both the quality and the quantity of the applications we received and our selection committee has been extremely busy reviewing them carefully.
If you’re looking for funding for your research project using DNA in saliva, DNA Genotek’s Grant Program might be the solution. Today, DNA Genotek launched a new Grant Program designed to uncover new, innovative applications for our products. The Grant Program encompasses three primary areas of focus:
The South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative (SATVI) of the University of Cape Town is a new customer who has tried the Oragene•DNA Self Collection Kits for the first time. SATVI's aim is to develop novel tuberculosis vaccination strategies. Their focus is on the clinical side of tuberculosis vaccine development. They therefore embark on clinical, epidemiological, immunological and genetic research to answer critical questions in TB vaccinology.
We were recently introduced to an organization at the heart of a movement focused on the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. It’s a movement that is designed to end these diseases faster. The organization is called the Global Business Coalition (GBC) on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria and DNA Genotek has joined the GBC in its fight to end these diseases. DNA Genotek chose to join the GBC because there is a natural fit between their mandate and our technologies. GBC brings together businesses across various sectors to help fight global epidemics. Our products, designed to enable safe, easy and reliable collection of DNA and RNA samples, are the building blocks to genetic research and analysis of these diseases. The Oragene family of products is unique in that they facilitate research in low-resource settings where these diseases are most prevalent.
