Last week, at the American Society for Human Genetics show in Washington, DC, several members of the DNA Genotek team presented posters reflecting new research findings. ASHG is an event that brings together over 5000 delegates from all areas of genetic research and is well known for encouraging and integrating research, scholarship and education in all areas of human genetics. We used this opportunity to showcase new research findings and technical evaluations for the Oragene family of products.

The first poster session was titled Evaluation of performance of gDNA from saliva collected with Oragene•DNA for the purpose of CNV analysis on the Agilent Human Genome CGH array 244K. This session, presented by DNA Genotek researcher Rafal Iwasiow, highlighted that the use of saliva DNA is a viable alternative to blood for CGH studies.

The second poster session was titled Evaluation of performance of genomic DNA from saliva collected with Oragene•DNA for the purpose of SNP discovery and CNV analysis on Illumina BeadChip technology. This poster, presented by DNA Genotek researcher Mike Tayeb, also highlighted that DNA from saliva is an alternative to DNA from blood for genome wide association studies (GWAS).

Here are some highlights from these poster presentations:

  • Oragene•DNA samples were observed to have good to excellent QC parameters as determined by the Agilent DNA Analytics software.
  • The intra-donor genotyping concordance for Oragene•DNA saliva samples was 100% for all samples on the Illumina Human1M-Duo. The saliva/blood concordance was on average 99.9%.
  • Saliva intra-donor CNV reproducibility and saliva/blood CNV concordance is excellent on the Illumina Human 1M-Duo with greater than 90% reproducibility between saliva replicates and greater than 80% reproducibility between paired blood and saliva. Therefore, DNA from saliva generates highly concordant data compared with DNA from blood for the same donor.

So what does this mean? It means that customers choosing Oragene for non-invasive collection of DNA from saliva can do so with confidence, knowing saliva in Oragene is a reliable alternative to blood. Want to learn more?
