For World TB Day this year, instead of playing a game to raise awareness (see last year’s post World TB Day at DNA Genotek), we asked our DNA Genotek colleagues to take a moment with friends and family to see how TB has impacted their lives. Many people, especially in more developed countries, might believe that tuberculosis has been eradicated. But for those of us who are more active in the TB community, we know we are still a long way from reaching our goal of ending TB.

As we enter a new year, it’s nice to look back and reflect over the past 12 months. At the end of 2015, we were wrapping up our exhibit, meetings and symposium session at the Union World Conference on Lung Health in Cape Town, ZA. This was where we officially launched OMNIgene®•SPUTUM.

It is essential for organizations, companies and individuals to work together in the fight to end tuberculosis (TB). That is exactly what the Mozambique National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) and the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, UK have been doing to test the accuracy of a new TB treatment response assay. They have extended this collaboration to investigate the accuracy and utility of DNA Genotek’s OMNIgene®•SPUTUM reagent.

In this two-part blog series, we had a chance to speak to Khalide Azam, Head of the Mozambique National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory (NTRL), Nureisha Cadir, FHI360-Challenge TB Technical Laboratory Officer, and Dr. Wilber Sabiiti, Senior Research fellow with the Infection – Global health implementation group, University of St. Andrews, Scotland, about how shipping raw sputum samples at ambient temperature can affect sample quality, and have serious impacts on the accuracy of the tuberculosis test results. We also spoke about the partnership between the University and NRL, the work they are collaborating on and how our OMNIgene®•SPUTUM product fits into their workflow. Dr. Sabiiti is the Principle Investigator of the OMNIgene•SPUTUM evaluation study in Mozambique with Mr. Azam and Ms. Cadir as Co-Investigators.

In late 2015, tuberculosis (TB) edged past HIV/AIDS to become the leading infectious disease worldwide. While impressive strides have been made over the past decade or so to control this debilitating and life-threatening disease, there are still gaps to close before TB can be eradicated.
